About the Department

Small grains genomics and genotyping is a collaborative effort between the Bandillo research group and the Brown-Guedira USDA-ARS genotyping lab in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at North Carolina State University. We are developing and deploying genomics tools to support small grains breeding programs. Much of our work is currently in wheat, but we also support research in oats and barley.

Essential Job Duties

A research specialist is vital to the development of lab techniques and protocols, assisting other lab members with experiments, as well as organizational and administrative tasks. This Research Specialist will support the research program’s application of new genotyping and genomics technologies.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in conducting high-throughput genotyping of plant samples and contributing to large-scale genetic analyses and experiments. In addition, the specialist will assist in the development, optimization, and refinement of lab techniques and protocols for genetic analysis. This position will also involve managing the collection, curation, and analysis of data from thousands of DNA samples, ensuring accuracy and efficiency throughout the process.

Responibilities include:
  • Supports research by assisting with experiments, procedures, and tests.
  • Develops and deploys work processes for screening large numbers of plant DNA samples.
  • Calibrates and operates instrumentation utilized in high-throughput workflows.
  • Design new workflows that utilize automated liquid handling instrumentation and modify procedures to maximize throughput and cut costs.
  • Contacts vendors to identify new genotyping technologies and instrumentation.
  • Modifies existing workflows to capitalize on efficiency.
  • Assists in data collection and curation for thousands of samples using end-point plate readers and DNA sequence analysis.
  • Supports research by ordering, handling, maintaining, and storing lab inventory.
  • Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and executes minor repairs or contacts service contractors.
  • Provides training to other lab members and collaborators on safety aspects of protocols and use of equipment.

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Careful attention to details. 
  • Knowledge of genotyping techniques.
  • Demonstrated wet lab skills, including nucleic acid extraction/purification, PCR, and sequencing library preparation.
  • Technical knowledge and skills to calibrate and operate liquid handlers, thermocyclers and plate readers.
