Job Summary

This position may be filled at the level of 102905-Research Area Specialist Associate or 102907-Research Area Specialist Intermediate, depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant.

A Research Area Specialist is sought to work closely with the PI and the research team at the Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention at the University of Michigan to develop, design, and conduct Institute projects and initiatives that focus on program evaluation. This is a hybrid position which requires at least 2 days per week onsite, in-person working in our Ann Arbor office, and quarterly in-person meetings with key project stakeholders in Lansing.

Key activities include: provide coordination and management for the maintenance and evaluation of the project(s); coordinate activities with partner organizations and subgrantees; programmatic evaluations to measure the effectiveness and success of grantees and identify areas of potential improvement; assess needs, provide training, and technical assistance to community partners, including leading regular meetings and sharing tailored resources on evaluation and evidence-based best practices; collect program data for both process and outcome evaluation; managing the development and implementation of a best practices guide for community violence interventions on a local scale; and generate reports to be shared with funders and community partners at regular basis.

The job functions of this role will include, but are not limited to:

Supervise the development, design, and evaluation of community violence prevention initiatives.

Review progress and evaluate results of community violence prevention initiatives and create and follow timelines

Formulate research methods and suggest options for improving quality, identify potential problems, and recommend and implement solutions.

Consult with community organizations and subgrantees to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research requirements and collaborate in development of new techniques and instruments.

Work with subgrantee community violence prevention programs to develop protocols and data collection methods, and gather data, supervise data collection and verification

Conduct and provide oversight for literature reviews.

Conducting needs assessments and evaluating program implementation progress, engagement, facilitators and barriers.

Tracking and reporting on activities, preparing reports, planning and organizing events

Managing budgets and financial reporting to funder

Drafting and managing IRBs and data use agreements

Perform data analysis and interpretation of results.

Required Qualifications*

Master's degree or Bachelor's degree with 2+ years of experience

Expertise in project management and/or research project coordination (1-3 years of experience for Associate level, 4-5 years for Intermediate level)

Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects to deadline

Experience with data management, including familiarity with statistical methodologies such as multiple regression, mixed models, and Poisson regression models.

Effective organization and management of multiple priorities in a complex environment

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

Careful attention to detail

Ability to both work independently and as a successful team member

Desired Qualifications*

3+ years of experience of programmatic evaluation in both moderate to large scale projects.

Experience with academic research enterprises including externally sponsored research, research administration, and funding sources.

Proven ability to lead large, cross-departmental programs and projects, building consensus across stakeholders and ensuring project requirements are met

Demonstrated knowledge of firearm injury prevention is preferred, but not necessary.

The Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention is a transdisciplinary institute that works to engage the breadth of expertise across the University of Michigan, with input from nonacademic stakeholders, to generate knowledge and advance solutions that will decrease firearm injury in the United States. The Institute fosters research that is mindful of the critical social and historical context of firearms in the U.S., and is inclusive and encourages diverse viewpoints, disciplinary perspectives, and approaches.
