Job Description
The Veterinary Medical Director for the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Center - Southern California (VMC-SC) will lead and manage the VMC-SC under the general guidance of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine's Associate Dean of the Clinical Programs/Chief Veterinary Medical Officer (CVMO). The role will focus on strategic planning, team building, and growth; providing an opportunity for the Veterinary Medical Director to shape the program in a new facility. The position will work in tandem with the Executive Director and the school's leadership to develop and execute the vision for the new facility. The facility will function as a referral and specialty clinic. Once the specialty hospital is established, the Veterinary Medical Director will focus on strategic leadership and management of clinical programs and external affairs and outreach, along with ongoing clinical responsibilities in their respective area of practice.
Department Overview
The University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine is expanding their veterinary specialty hospital in Southern California. The VMC-SC is a satellite specialty referral and 24-hour emergency hospital in San Diego. This will expand the SVM's role in Southern California while providing clients and referring veterinarians with the highest level of customer care. Net income from this practice which will be staffed by leading non-academic boarded specialists in surgery, internal medicine, critical care, and other specialties will be used to support the mission of the School of Veterinary Medicine. This off-site clinical presence will also enable UC Davis to reach a broader base of clients and supporters and leverage the clinical, teaching and research excellence at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Davis, California.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- Must possess a License to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California.
- Must be a Board-Certified Veterinary Specialist.
- Must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from a veterinary college/school accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or equivalent.
- Ten years of management experience in a veterinary medical clinic and emergency/critical care clinic leading veterinary teams.
- Documented experience growing and building a specialty veterinary practice.
- Extensive industry experience and track record of positive relationships with veterinary leaders and professional organizations.
- Expert knowledge associated with conducting examinations, prescribing and administering treatments, and advising owners and handlers.
- Documented excellence in leadership and communication skills. Track record of effective communication (oral and written) of direction, vision, and mission of a veterinary medical clinic.
- Demonstrated ability to build a practice in a revenue-generating, sustainable, and ethical manner.
- Knowledge of the laws, regulations, and procedures governing operations and administration of a specialty veterinary hospital including workplace health and safety.

- Additional qualifications related to practice management (e.g., change management certification/courses, Lean Six Sigma training).

Work Environment
